I was an English teacher at the local high school and then became the librarian at one of the local middle schools. I began reading YA lit so that I could relate to what my students were reading, have conversations with them and recommend books. Now, I choose YA over adult all the time and cannot stop reading YA lit!

Libraries as Community Centers
In addition to the critical role public libraries play in our communities by providing free access to resources and materials, they have also become community centers—where people come to socialize, collaborate and connect. A recent article noted: “Bookstores and libraries have long played a central role in fostering a deeper appreciation of knowledge, and in lifelong learning. Increasingly, these places are also filling another critical need in our communities, by providing a haven for those seeking a communal connection in an ever-more isolated world.”

sharyngeeksrocks
I study and collect unusual rocks and crystals. I check out books that talk about rocks and minerals and how they are formed in the Earth. Rocks and crystals are beautiful and they are born in a violent way. They take thousands of years to form and sometimes contain fossils. Crystals are used in watches and computer chips. Some people believe that rocks and crystals contain energy. Others believe they contain nature spirits. Personally, I believe that everything is an expression of Christ whom the Bible says is the word from which all things were made in the Gospel of John.

tylergeeksbaseball
I have been entranced by the game of baseball for the entirety of my 20 years on earth. My birth announcement was in the form of a baseball card and I still remember that slightly musty smell of "100 Best Baseball Players of All Time"—the first book I ever checked out with my library card. Now a young adult, I've delved into the baseball blogosphere; I write detailed analyses of players and teams using new-age stats. I've morphed into a Detroit Tigers super fan and I don't see any end in sight.

I have my BA in English, and am especially fond of Brit Lit. I love their dry sense of humor and directness. Graham Greene had a clear, concise writing style which makes me grab onto every word and sentence. I love the way he wrote short stories. There always seems to be at least one viable message in his themes for each reader that reads him.

I started geeking ocean liners from the very first second I heard about Titanic and, in time, I got introduced to all the ocean liners. I love the library here in Cicero, Indiana, because I hang out here a lot, whether I'm using the computer or reading books on ocean liners. I also love the fact that the decor reminds me of the library on Cunard's RMS Lusitania.

As the oldest out of three siblings of divorced parents, I instantly took on the role of 'fix it' person. The need to try to fix anything that appeared to be in need of fixing or refurbishing.
I love it when things work, from the simplest to the most complex of things. I remember my first set of tools...a butter knife, a pair of cutting shears and a Phillips screwdriver.
Since that time, I have graduated to being a part of four 'Women Build' Habitat for Humanity projects where I now proudly carry my tool belt with 'real' tools.

I've always wanted to write a book. You can look through countless notebooks of mine and see failed attempts at novellas starting from when I was five years old. They increased in length as time went on. I've never been able to completely finish a story because the characters became so real to me that I couldn't just leave them.
I appear to have superlative (ooh, big word) skill in English/Lit class, but that's because I admire the minds and thought patterns of the people we study and want to be exactly like them someday.
I love to diagram sentences. I read the dictionary for fun. I learn new words because it's exciting to me. I'm a geek, and I'm proud of it.

Libraries Help Job Seekers

Knowing the library’s vital role in providing resources to help people get back to work, many librarians have gotten creative—including partnering with local universities, businesses and organizations—to develop helpful programs and resources.

My first adventure into the inner world of non-profits came to me as Faith Feeds, a non-profit I helped start with two others as a shared passion. It opened the door to great friends and a new appreciation of my community. We decrease waste of fresh produce through gleaning and delivering to people at risk for hunger. I have always loved to garden and reading books about gardening and trying to grow new things. That leads to too much produce for just my family! Now I grow food to donate. sharyngeeksgenealogy
I like to do genealogy research. Using Ancestry.com, Ancestry.com Library Edition, Rootsweb.org and a few other genealogy Web sites, I have found 192 ancestors, including many living relatives whom I have never met. A cousin in Michigan (that I met through Ancestry.com) and I are planning a family reunion this year. The stories that research reveals from time-to-time have led me to relatives in nearly every state in the U.S., and unlikely origins in Ireland and Paris, France.
Through seeing descriptions of slaves, I discovered my unacknowledged European ancestry. For most of my life, I thought of myself as African-Native American and longed only to know what tribes my people originated from on both sides. However, I have discovered blacks described as Mulattos in every generation back to 1820, and this slave was described as 'yellow.' You never know what you will find. I also traveled to Mississippi and saw the land that my ancestors have owned and farmed since before the 1800s. I was shocked to find a prime piece of real estate that formed part of the downtown 'historic' district in Mississippi. My search continues.

More Public Library Funding Myths
There are many common myths when it comes to public library funding. Much too often, people believe that if they don’t support the library with a levy or referendum, the money will come from either state or federal funds. This simply isn’t the case. Overall, most U.S. public libraries get the majority of their budget from local dollars. To help you navigate these kinds of library funding myths—and help you as you discuss library support in your communities—we’ve added more library myths and realities on this site. Take a look!

I moved to Kokomo from Maryland two years ago. The first thing I did was look for the local library. At that time it was housed in an elementary school. I have found so many enjoyable books on the subjects I enjoy, and many new authors, as well as my favorites. The librarians and technicians are always on top of their game when I need help. kimberlygeeksgiraffes
Giraffes are the tallest mammals on earth... and, I think, the most beautiful! Giraffes give birth standing up, and the six-foot-tall, 100-150 lb. baby falls 5-6 feet to the ground! Eventually, it will grow up to have six-foot-long legs, a six-foot, 600-pound neck, a 21-inch tongue, and a two-foot-long, 25-pound heart. Even though the giraffe's neck is so long, it has the same number of vertebrae (7) in it as a human's neck! Giraffes can run up to 35 miles per hour, and no two giraffes have exactly the same spots. I geek Giraffa camelopardalis!

My dog came to me as a rescue puppy, so we knew nothing of her history. She has grown into a beautiful and energetic dog. Reading has always been a love of mine since I finally learned how to read. Libraries have been an endless source of books to me my whole life. And whenever I get the chance, I love to volunteer at the library. My best friend and I go at least once a week and help out together. Not only do I love read, but I love to share that love with other people.
I don't just blog about books, though, a lot of the stuff I blog about is life and fandoms (which ultimately comes back to books I suppose). Some of my favorite fandoms are Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, Divergent, and American Horror Story. The fans are usually so welcoming and I love to have long conversations about the books we've both loved, or books that we think are similar to them. Books and blogging are endless source of entertainment for me and the library just enables my wonderful addiction to the word.

cjgeeksfantasy
Whether it is science fiction or flat out elves, I've always adored fantasy stories as a kid. I loved reading various stories whether it be about actual Greek mythology, about pointy eared adventurers trying to save the world or about an average person suddenly getting super powers. My library allowed me access to tons of these books and more as a kid. As I got older and began writing stories and other characters, it allowed me books to help me create worlds, too. Books on different things found in fantasy settings, books on different lores, myths, and religions, even books on how to write better.
Now I am on my way to a career of creating my own worlds. I create something new and fantastical every day. And I don't think I could have ever been able to write as well or create such worlds or creatures without access to these books from my local library. Thank you for helping me get further in my career as a game designer.

ednageeksmyths&folklore
Since I was a child, I would reach for books with stories from different cultures—collections of tales about heroes and heroines, folklore, fables and myths. I went through a stage of obsessing over Greek mythology. I poured through the Greek myth books at my school and city libraries whenever I could. I became quite an 'expert' at the age of 10.
This paid off years later when all hope hinged on me in a team game of Trivial Pursuit. Deep within the cells of my brain lay dormant the answer to: Who was the mortal who stole fire from Mt. Olympus? After an initial freak-out moment, I blurted: Prometheus. I was a hero that day thanks, in part, to my local libraries! Today, I'm an author/illustrator whose first book is a folk tale about a mountain on the island Kaua'i.

I mix colored pencils the way one mixes paint before using on paper... mix with a little white, add some gray, etc. That is what I truly enjoy (geek). Since I have no access to a home computer except here (cell phones can only take you so far), the library supplies the computers where you can Google the information (art, colors, colored pencils), and use it to your own advantage. It’s a whole new world, and truly a stress buster!

veronicageeksgraphicnovels
Since my freshman year in high school, I've been a fan of manga (Japanese comics), which is mostly refer as 'graphic novels' among librarians. Every volume I can find/read gives me the inspiration to create one amateur illustration to post online to share my adoration toward a certain character and/or series. This gave me the idea to study for a professional degree someday in publishing in order to someday work in a publishing industry that specializes in converting Japanese to English-translated manga. As of now, as a college student/part time library clerk, I sometimes give the teen librarian a heads up on the latest and possible hit series to add to the manga section.

I love showing these books to children and their parents when they visit our children's department. The children's librarian and I both have Weimaraners, so we particularly love the books and the reaction on children's faces when they read them.

bkackberrygeekschoralmusic
I love listening to choral music and singing in a choir. I think the reason that it's such a spiritual and social experience is that you have to sound good with other people, you have to fit in with them. And when I sing with other people, I love the challenge of focusing on my part while listening to the beautiful mishmash of voices that we all make.

I am an assistant librarian (also in library school!) at a culinary school. Most of our students have been laid off of their jobs and are starting new careers. They have no computer training and have limited experience writing papers. It is very rewarding to see how much they grow in their first couple terms in school. They show in their presentations their passion for food and realize how being a chef is more than cooking. Our library has become a hub for activity and where students know they can ask any and all questions.

jackgeeksbasketball
In 2009, I found out that I could go to my local health club on Sunday mornings and practice shooting baskets and if others were there to practice, I could potentially play a basketball game with three, four or five other people and get a good cardio workout for an hour or more without even thinking about working out. Also, each week I go to play basketball, I try to improve my game by talking to others. I also read techniques for improving shooting among other basketball skills on the Internet or from reading books at the library. I know now that there are mechanical methods, as well as mental approaches to learning to improve basketball skills. In addition, playing games such as Around the World, Horse and 21 help to improve my basic skills. Finally, I enjoy the social interaction with the people who have become regulars at the gym on Sundays.

I read them to children every day. I buy them by the dozen. I spend HOURS sitting in the children's section of my public library looking for the perfect ones. Now, I am attempting to write one! I am an elementary school librarian who loves picture books!
I am currently participating in a writing campaign called Picture Book Idea Month, or PiBoIdMo. There are only two days left, and I have far exceeded my 30 ideas in 30 days goal. I have thoroughly loved every minute of this experience! There is definitely a learning curve to the kid lit publishing industry, and thanks to the folks I have met through PiBoIdMo, I feel so much closer to meeting my lifelong goal of becoming a published author.
Walking into my first public library at age three was like walking into a dream. My mother read to me before I could sit up, and I couldn't wait to get my first library card. I have been an avid user of of public libraries throughout my life—both for academic and entertainment purposes. Six years ago, I decided that I wanted to become a librarian, so I went back to school, got a master's degree in library and information science, and opened a brand new elementary school library in North Texas. What an experience! I know what it takes to keep a library going—the time, the talent, and the funding. We provide essential services to our patrons. I love what I do, and I love my library!

ericgeekshiphop
My true facts is: I love hip-hop...the culture, the music, and the movement where it speaks the truth and tells it in a real feeling. One of my favorite moments in hip-hop world is break dancing. The reason is this, it made me to look back at the beginnings of my time where it was nothing, but having a good time and just enjoying myself. I've been reading the different stories from RUN DMC to Ice Cube, all day, every day. One of the advice is, 'Be true to yourself.'
A lot of artists in today's hip-hop aren't being truthful as long as they can't crossover to mainstream appeal. I've always loved break dancing and still to this day...enjoying! Everywhere I go where there's is a tournament, a break dance event is there. Hip-hop will never die in my own life. After college, I'm thinking about starting my own college course that deals with everything in hip-hop: culture, movement, dance, fashion, historical moments—all the things I've always done it for.
When today's rap music came along, it made me want to quit rapping because looking at every artist who doesn't know how to behave themselves. My thing here is to teach what's right and wrong for what to do and not to do. My advice to you is this: No matter what you've done in life, just be true to yourself and always...stay true to yourself and be yourself.

Fiber, it's not just what's for breakfast. It's silk. It's wool. It's cotton. It's alpaca. It's what you spin using a spindle or a wheel. It's what you knit with, crochet with, quilt with, stitch with, weave with, felt with, or whatever craft with...it's a thousand possibilities all wrapped up in a single solitary word: Fiber. It's a world that would have never opened for me hadn't it been for my local library providing me with the free resources I needed to learn about every aspect of my quickly growing obsession.
Thanks to the library, I have obtained books that have helped me to learn how to knit, crochet, and is teaching me how to spindle spin and possibly dye my own personalized yarn. I also know that whatever I geek, the library will always be there to get it done. Whether it's writing a paper for school, learning a new hobby, or just getting a really good book, I always know where to turn for help.

New ‘Libraries in Crisis’ Series
The Huffington Post recently introduced a new series called Libraries in Crisis. This ongoing series focuses on the importance of public libraries and the critical funding issues many libraries face around the country.
"Like our public parks and museums, public libraries are free, non-commercial gathering places for everyone, regardless of income," noted Andrew Losowsky, books editor for the Huffington Post and author of the introduction to the series. "If information is power, then libraries are the essence of democracy and freedom. In these times of economic difficulty, more people are using them than ever, to do more than merely check out books. Yet our nation's public libraries appear to be under threat by a litany of cuts, forced upon them by state and local committees, cuts that often began before the recent economic downturn."
Take a look at the first article.

I stumbled into soap making while looking for a way to express my creativity, work with my hands, and make some extra money. Now, I can't imagine not doing it. Best of all, I get to help others with my creations, and hearing about the results is a reward within itself.

Losing yourself in a book, only to find that you were there all along a part of the story. Whether you were just a witness to what happened or you were the main character, what could be better? The Effective Equalizer
Public libraries play a critical role in every community! “Libraries are essential to an educated and enlightened community because, next to schools, they are the most effective equalizer between all socio-economic and demographic groups, yet are highly cost-effective. Libraries uniquely provide programs for literacy and reading, opportunities for research, cultural events and information to all age groups. And this year, libraries have been recognized by FEMA as essential community services along with police, fire, emergency services, medical care, education and utilities.” Read the complete article.

I am a high school librarian, so keeping up with what's new in young adult literature is a full-time job. Having an animated conversation about a novel with a teenager is such a joy, only second to being able to recommend a title that ignites a spark in a reluctant reader.
The saddest part of my job is when I have to tell a young reader that we won't be able to get that hot new novel for him/her because we have a budget of $0. Thank goodness for our local public library!

Libraries Still Vital in the Internet Age
Saying that the Internet will replace libraries is not an uncommon argument against library funding, but it simply doesn’t hold water. Public libraries provide access to information and resources—often critical to people in a struggling economy—that bring value to individuals and entire communities. According to a librarian in Louisiana, "Libraries are a public good and a civic responsibility. They are about our future as much as they are our past....The notion that they could be replaced by Google is tantamount to suggesting that Americans are better off with vending machines instead of farmer's markets....Cut the libraries and you cut everything that goes with them…"

ericgeekshiphop
Hip-hop grew in an area of Bronx, New York in the 70's.That was the beginning before me because I was born on November 28,1984. To me, it's my part of the life I want. Hip-hop gives me a life to live and learn for. The Elements are: MC-ing, DJ-ing, grafitti, break dancing, and beat-boxing. My favorite idols are from Run-DMC to Nas and Jay-Z. What made me to look back at the early days before blinging, etc., it was the good times like grabbing the microphone and saying things like this: "Just throw your hands in the air and wave it like you just don't care. If you wanna get down for B-Eazy, somebody say, 'Oh Yeah'"! Right now, we have today's people that sounds pathetic and wackness. It's like nothing is the same as was back in the day. (Hip-Hop music in the 2000s isn't real...example: Lil' Wayne, 50 Cent, Kanye, etc. That's where it all happens to come crashing down.)
Now making myself looking back, it's time to teach young people to know what's right, wrong, real, fake, good, bad, happy, sad, best, greatest or worst in the hip-hop culture. One phrase I'll have to say: 'Just be yourself and stay true to yourself.' Don't be like any others who can't stay true or stay real. It's time to go back...back to the time I grew up on hip-hop as a country boy.
I can remember the days of hip-hop going from nothing to something, including break-dancing, fresh fest, hip-hop artists switching from rapping to acting, the glory days of 2Pac and Notorious B.I.G., and the triumphant tragedies that shocked us down. What I think about today's rappers is to stop rapping for now. Hip-Hop saved me without commercialism. That's what keeping it real is all about.

michaelgeeksthebible
About ten years ago, I made a quality decision to attempt to the best of my ability to live my life as patterned by Jesus; it was while at a library that I discovered a study Bible that has been very helpful in this endeavor. Formerly known as The Full Life Study Bible, the Life in the Spirit Study Bible this book has given me understanding in areas where most people struggle in their understanding of the principles and practices of the Christian faith.
I would recommend that those who are having trouble understanding what the word of God is saying, stop by your local library, browse through the shelves and see if you can't find the tools you need to get the job done! If not, browse the Internet; there is hardly anything that you want to know that you can't find through the Internet, and most of the searches done right now are done through the public library.

barbarageeksantiques&vintageitems
About 45 years ago, I went to Wisconsin on vacation to visit my older sister Gloria. She had somehow discovered her love for antiques and took my husband and I around to her favorite shops. Our first antique purchase was an adorable little 'pressed back' oak child’s rocking chair. We bought this at an old one-room schoolhouse for our then 18 month old daughter Sherry! Many, many, many purchases followed as we 'fell in love' with vintage and antique items. Soon we needed to buy a bigger house; and that's when we bought our ten room farmhouse and moved to South Lyon from Plymouth.
About 17 years ago, with the house and hay barn now full to the rafters, we decided we needed to start selling our over-abundance of beautiful things, and that's how Somewhere-in-Time Antiques got its start! We are still collecting and selling antiques at Silver Hills Antiques at Gustafsons in the beautiful little village of Pentwater on Lake Michigan on the west side of the state! And we couldn't geek it more!
Do you geek antiques? Come see us sometime and see if you geek the same things we do—it might be the beginning of a lifelong hobby or business venture for you too?
My library is in South Lyon and it has been an invaluable help to me in, first of all, learning more about the things I collect and geek, then in helping me research the values of the items I wish to sell. I geek the world of knowledge the library makes available to me without cost! I also geek the classes the library has offered to help me with poster making and advertising brochures, etc., and on and on and on. In short: I GEEK the library!

Libraries Help the Book Business
A new survey conducted by Library Journal indicates that public libraries do not deter book sales, but actually help bolster the book business. “Our data show that over 50 percent of all library users report purchasing books by an author they were introduced to in the library,” said Library Journal Executive Editor Rebecca Miller. “This debunks the myth that when a library buys a book the publisher loses future sales. Instead, it confirms that the public library does not only incubate and support literacy, as is well understood in our culture, but it is an active partner with the publishing industry in building the book market, not to mention the burgeoning e-book market.”

A world without crosswords would be very lackluster. When I saw the alphabet stretched out in all its glory, above the chalkboard in kindergarten, the letters seemed to be marching down a divided highway. The important-looking uppercase letters, pals with the diminutive lowercase, seemed to be heading off somewhere—somewhere I wanted to go, for sure!
The trip the letters were taking was one to riches. Words, well, they just can't be beat in my book. And, what's better than trying to think of the perfect word for what words are (a 10 letter word that starts with u and ends an e)?

Public Libraries Maintain Focus
Many public libraries in the U.S. face funding challenges that have forced them to do more with less. Remarkably, these libraries still work to evolve, so they can provide the resources and services needed by their communities. “Libraries, in every way, work for us,” stated writer Cat Johnson in a recent article posted on the online magazine Shareable. “They are what we want them to be and they are constantly evolving to keep up with our changing needs. They are funded primarily by tax dollars and their mission is to provide free and open access to information. They are committed to bridging the digital divide, enriching communities and supporting individuals in reaching their personal potential. And they need our help.”
Support your public library now and in the future. Start a community conversation today!

Local Libraries Change Lives
Local libraries provide more than just books, computers and other resources; they are part of the fabric of the communities they serve. They inspire and enable success. A Rhode Island resident eloquently stated her feelings in a recent editorial saying, "I cannot imagine a community today raising the future leaders of America without a local library."
The Geek the Library team agrees. Get your geek on. Show your support!

Library Advocates are Critical
Speaking out about the value of public libraries in your community is so important. If you have a compelling story, talk about it! "Library members who share their stories as advocates for the library are invaluable,” noted Gary Wasdin, executive director of the Omaha Public Library, in a recent Omaha World-Herald editorial. “These individuals put a face to public libraries and remind our community why public and private support is important. Whether the library contributed to the story of a child who was able to increase his reading comprehension skills or an adult looking for employment, the outcome is the same: a better educated and stronger community."

Public Libraries: A Resource for Life
Most people have fond memories of going to their local library as a child. And for many, in addition to story time and their first chapter book, libraries are an important part of every stage of life. If you haven’t been to the public library in a while, you may be surprised at the wide variety of resources available.

I am a teen librarian and recently we started doing a "Random Acts of Kindness" program that has taken off in popularity with the teens here. At first we were going out and helping the elderly, carrying groceries, etc...but it has quickly turned in to a community clean-up project. We have since planted trees, cleaned up parks and highways, and had a terrific time doing it. And my groups keep growing bigger with each program! Love it!

As a Lansing Derby Vixen, I have learned more in the past 18 months about myself, my community and the amount of good 40 strong, empowered women can do for their community than I ever learned before strapping on my skates. Roller derby is a tough, competitive sport, but it's also an intellectual game, a challenge, a proving ground and a generator of good deeds. The Derby Vixens have raised thousands of dollars for charities, volunteered hundreds of man hours at community events, and taught many young girls and teens that they are strong, fierce and can do whatever they set their minds to. I geek roller derby, but mostly because of the good it has done (and will continue to do) in my community.

My grandma used to read to me every night before bed and take me to weekly reading programs at the local library. I grew up reading and with a passion for public libraries. My senior year of college I decided that instead of going into a Masters program for psychology, I had to follow my heart and enter a library science program instead. This is my first semester and I can't wait to work for the institution that changed my life so much.

Communities Sustain Libraries
Many public libraries are struggling and need your support! “The noose tightening around public budgets is also putting the squeeze on our libraries. While few would argue that libraries, too, must find ways to do more with less, we all have a responsibility to maintain and sustain these institutions because they are the cornerstones of our communities.” See the complete article.

Libraries Level the Playing Field
Public libraries provide equal access to information—helping many Americans improve their lives every day. “Public libraries are so important in communities because they’re open access to unfettered information of all kinds,” said American Library Association President Molly Raphael in a recent online article. “An informed citizenry is what makes a democracy work. When so much of our economy is driven by information, libraries level the playing field and provide open access to knowledge in its broadest sense.”

Sandusky District Library in Sandusky, Michigan, is doing an amazing community outreach effort for their local Geek the Library campaign. As a result, their campaign is taking on a life of its own. Nothing inspires me more than to see the believers of many faiths rise so far above their differences that they are freed to respond to that most essential of spiritual impulses that binds people together. Since 'religion' is a word that derives from 'ligare,' to bind, then the things that interfere with binding us all together should be surpassed to allow the fulfillment of the spirit of all religion.

Seriously, have you ever looked at pictures of sidewalk art online? They're awesome! Many of the artists can make an ordinary stretch of sidewalk look like a three-dimensional swimming pool or a giant bottle of soda if you stand at the right angle. Of course, if you're standing in the wrong spot, they look contorted and strange, but that just makes it that much cooler because it means that the artists have to know what distance and perspective will do the image.

Library Card Sign-up Month
Did you know that September is Library Card Sign-up Month? Your public library card might just be the most valuable item in your wallet! Please take time this month to talk to members of your community about how their library card is the key to so many amazing things. Discuss your own experiences and how you use it at your local library. While not everyone will take advantage of the library card’s incredible value, most people will see the overall significance for the community, which might lead to supporting the library when it counts.

Public Libraries and Education
As kids head back to school this year, think about the public library’s role in education. Make sure the youth in your community have a thriving library. What can you do right now? Talk to your community about why the library makes a huge difference in the lives of young people. Your voice matters!

Popular examples of tokusatsu shows are: Kamen Rider, Super Sentai, and Ultraman. Super Sentai is otherwise known as Power Rangers in America.

Inspiring Letters About Libraries
Children’s librarians make a significant difference in the lives of young people every day. We wanted to inspire you with the efforts of one very special Troy, Michigan, librarian. In 1971, Marguerite Hart reached out to actors, authors, artists, musicians, playwrights, librarians and politicians, and asked them to write a letter to the children of Troy about the importance of libraries. Take a look at the amazing response!

Our need for library support is extremely crucial as we librarians strive to thoroughly promote the importance of constant curiosity and life-long learning. Learning does not end in the classroom and we need a place to retreat to freely explore and spark our curiosities as well as our needs for job searches, computer knowledge and free materials. The importance of libraries will never cease!

suziegeeksgay&lesbianstuff
I grew up in a small mining community, over six hours drive from the nearest city. As a result, when I started to realise I was gay, the library was my life line, in finding out more, and later, connecting with the gay and lesbian community. The library was the only place in town I could go. We had no gay bar, no support group, no resources in schools. Not only did the library provide me with gay and lesbian books, novels and movies, but its Internet access meant I could look at queer-themed Web sites, without fear that my parents would look at what I was doing on my shared family PC at home.
Now I am half way through my library degree, and and I seem to have begun something of a crusade to educate both libraries and their users about how libraries have the potential to be a queer-friendly place, and how libraries can help cater for the gay and lesbian community.

Ever since I was a little girl, I loved to learn and read. Even though all the other kids in school say that reading is dumb and stupid, I still read like crazy! I love the freedom you have when you read! You can just be yourself and imagine whatever you want. You can be a princess or a super hero. You aren't discriminated by who you are or who you aren't. You can make your life into a magical romance or a spine chilling action. It doesn't matter and the options are unlimited. I guess what I am trying to say is don't stop reading just because other people don't. If you love what you do, do it. If not, don't. Just don't let other people lay out your life out for you. Just be yourself!

evageekshobbies
As a hobby jumper, I am often researching new interests, techniques for current interests, and what to do with leftovers of or how to build upon past interests. The library is useful in this as it provides a place for the community to find local goings on, classes, etc., along with it's no cost access to information and entertainment. Personal growth and education are easily supplemented in a trip to the library, as well as getting to sample a book, see if it is useful and necessary to purchase. I often check out books and then find that it would be an asset to own this book to reread or use throughout my life. I miss trips to library for events, I feel like they have lost so much funding that it's harder to get things going for the community. I would love to see the old programs brought back and maybe some new ones added, as well! Viva la library!

Library User Myths and Facts
Do people who have access to computers and the Internet at home still access both at the public library? The answer is, yes, according to a new research brief by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). The study debunks this and many other common myths about library users. “This study challenges commonly held perceptions about library users and demonstrates public libraries’ role in the global information economy,” said Susan Hildreth, IMLS director, in a press release about the brief. “Libraries are constantly reinventing themselves to meet the ever-changing information needs of their communities.”

kategeekstelevisionshows
As long as I can remember, my family's been a TV family. Starting in college, I really started watching a lot more TV myself, and now it's a rare night when I don't have something to watch. Not just because I love the drama of a well-written show (though I do!), but because our television programming displays our culture values—and sometimes tries to inform how our values should change for the future. Our society is reflected in what's on TV from the jokes that are told, to the demographics of the characters, and to the way the show embraces (or rejects) social-political controversy. Add in stories about stars like Charlie Sheen and we really can come to understand ourselves as members of a modern society a thousand times better by taking a deep look at our media. And that's why I love TV.

Public Libraries are Social Hubs
These days, you never know who you will run into when visiting the public library. People flock to the library for help with their small business, career advice, computer training, to use free meeting space and so many other services—that go way beyond just borrowing books or story time with the kids. A recent article notes: “With so much information online, librarians have become free guides to learning and are often the first people job seekers turn to if they have no computer at home. During the recession libraries have become centers for career counseling, financial literacy and small business development.”

I love reading. I love writing. I love the fact that words play such a vital role in who we are. We all have our own natural syntax and no two people talk or write exactly alike. I enjoy the anguish a writer or speaker goes through to find just the right words and the jubilation when they are finally found. I love that simple scratches on a page can turn into new worlds and fantastic ideas. I also love the fleeting quality of words, that once said or written they can either be remembered forever or forgotten the next moment. I think many people have forgotten how powerful words can be and if words were chosen more carefully, the world would be a better place.

As a librarian at a university in Georgia, I collaborate with lots of people to make sure we have the information resources we need in our library...books, journals, databases, videos, etc. This is a challenge because of the level of state funding our institution receives. As enrollment grows, prices grow (lots of e-resources are priced according to enrollment), but our budget doesn't. Thankfully our administration does its best to supplement our budget with other revenues, but we still have to deal with canceling subscriptions to balance the budget, even while we're growing new doctoral programs.

We go 2-3 times a year to enjoy the shows, the shopping, the Euro English vibe in Ontario, and the food! (What a place for food!) If I could retire there, I would! (And there's also this 'teensy celebrity' trivia byte these days about Stratford. Not many people know!)

There is no better place to people watch than the library. While casually reading the newspaper or a novel, it's easy to take a quick glance at the people around all interacting—usually very quietly. As I writer, I wonder what kind of characters are sitting next to me. Sometimes I use the people I see in the library as inspiration for characters in stories.

Public Libraries Enrich Lives
Public libraries provide a unique opportunity for anyone to access not only books, but technology and all kinds of information and resources. Yet, libraries cannot continue to play the important role they currently have in American communities without continued support.
In a recent newspaper column, Kathleen Gerard, a freelance writer from New Jersey, said: “If we keep chipping away at our libraries, we’ll be going backwards, betraying the dream of the founders who gave of themselves and followed their vision, laying the foundation to make the library a local place to further our educations, cultivate our minds and passions, and enrich the lives of ordinary people like me who have their own stories to live... and to tell.”

Planning a trip is half the fun. That is where my library helps out. The library has many travel books that have helped me locate beaches I would like to visit and then I can plan a trip. Besides swimming, fishing and enjoying the warmth and sunshine at the beach, the next best thing is kicking back in a beach chair and reading a book or magazine.

I have wanted a house rabbit for many years. After our dog was gone we had a small pet that didn't live very long. I think a pet is good for kids so I started to consider a rabbit after my husband sent me a link of adoptable pets. A dog is tough because you have to plan your life around it. A rabbit can be left for a day without having to 'let it out' and they make great pets.
We now have a wonderful English Spot Mix rabbit named Pete and he is awesome! He is so cute, fun to watch, smart (he knows where his treats are kept and can open the door to the cabinet) and he is even litter trained! We adopted him from a local rescue and have found a new friend and family member!

I can't travel enough! I love it, I'd be away 365 days/year, if I could. Unfortunately, like most people, I can't do that. So, I use my library to get my travel geek on. I borrow videos of locals I want to explore in the future. I watch them as I walk on the treadmill and can imagine I am away for some small part of my day. I use the library's resources to explore information on new destinations, cost analysis, research history, language, get maps, check out hotels, parks, look into must see places and those off the beaten path. I can 'escape' for a few hours or actually plan my trips—all with the help of the library. The library is my own little vacation in a box!

kennethgeeksmassagetherapy
How important is massage therapy? How important is a library to massage therapy?
I took over a library in 2008 that was just a 4x8 box open a few days a week for half an hour. With zero budget and a whole lot of duct tape, that library is now in a 21x24 room with over 2,000 items listed in the online catalog; a library with more unique titles than the five University of Washington libraries, all King County libraries and the Seattle Public Library combined. Last year, the library obtained an agreement to offer the complete male/female data set of the National Library of Medicine's Visible Human Project. This year, the library's application was approved to be a member of the National Library of Medicine's network (5,000+ strong nationally).
But how important is a library to massage therapy? Did you know that massage therapists are the third most licensed healthcare professionals in Washington State? A profession without a repository of their great works can expect only a consolation prize—a museum exhibit next to other long dead historical figures.
That's their library in a nutshell. The Grotto Library of Cortiva Institute—Seattle.
Kenneth is a librarian from Washington.

Importance of Library as Place
Library buildings, and the services and resources available in person, can never be completely replaced. Physically going to a library provides a unique experience and the value of this experience needs to be preserved. According to a recent article, “The anniversary of the New York Public Library’s main building is an occasion to talk about why the library needs to be a place as well as an ethereal mass of data residing somewhere in ‘the cloud.’ Not everything we need or want to know about the world can be transmitted via a screen, and not every experience can be digitized.”

Libraries Connect Communities
Public libraries play a unique role in every community—often representing the only place that encourages everyone, regardless of income or social stature, to access the same resources, collaborate and make connections. A recent article in the Guardian said, "The libraries' most powerful asset is the conversation they provide—between books and readers, between children and parents, between individuals and the collective world. Take them away and those voices turn inwards or vanish. Turns out that libraries have nothing at all to do with silence.”

My family came to America in the 1600's from England. My great uncle traced our family tree back hundreds and hundreds of years. He did it the old school way by visiting libraries and courthouses and yes...graveyards.
Now there are simple ways to research my family history and it's interesting that demand for libraries keeps growing (169 million users) and yet they are facing the biggest budgets cuts ever. This is the reason we need to individually support our local libraries. We may use it for genealogy, doing homework, research, borrowing valuable resources, creating a resume, finding a job online, etc., but we each must stand up for libraries.
It's cool because now I work for a genealogy technology company and we use resources from libraries all over the United States. I'm also sharing this cool infographic which tells the story.

More Than Just Books
Public libraries play an important role for individuals and communities. Often, they are a vital community gathering place and the only free access to new technology. “One of the things that libraries will continue to do is to level the playing field between the technology haves and have nots,” says Camille Leslie, director of the Massillon Public Library in a recent article.
“Even as technology prices come down, new things come on the market and there will always be people who won’t be able to afford them. That’s a very important thing for people to remember. It makes all of society better if everyone can have access to that technology. Public libraries allow that to happen.”

Our public library has hundreds of books on arts and crafts, jewelry-making, collage and ways to create recycled and re-purposed artwork. I love to take a cool piece of art, jewelry or clothing, or even take an old photo, a magazine, a greeting card or piece of ephemera and disassemble it and then reassemble it to create something new and unique!

genegeekstinker
From the Preface of Getting Started With Arduino by Massimo Banzi, I've spent a long time looking for an English word that would sum up that way of working without a specific plan, starting with one idea and ending up with a completely unexecpted result. Finally, 'tinkering' came along. I recognized how this word has been used in many other fields to describe a way of operating and to portray people who set out on a path of exploration. For example, the generation of French directors who gave birth to the 'Nouvelle Vauge' were called the 'tinkerers.'
The best definition of tinkering that I've ever found comes from an exhibition held at the Exploratorium in San Francisco: "Tinkering is what happens when you try something you don't quite know how to do, guided by a whim, imagination and curiosity. When you tinker, there are no instructions, but there are also no failures, no right or wrong ways of doing things. It's about figuring out how things work and reworking them. Contraptions, machines, wildly mismatched objects working in harmony—this is the stuff of tinkering. Tinkering is, at its most basic, a process that marries play and inquiry." For the wealth of knowledge it brings to this process, I love the library.

Manga was introduced to me by a good friend of mine, in the form of a little-known title called +Anima. She forced them on me and told me I had to read them, so I grudgiungly did. The next thing I knew, I was tearing down the walls in the library in search of new manga to read, like FullMetal Alchemist, while watching as much anime as I could find.
I think it's safe to say that I geek manga.

larageekssmalllibraries&dogs&christianfiction
I geek small libraries! I've worked at two small libraries (Base Library in Wyoming and Village Library in Vandenberg Village in Lompoc, California) and don't want to go large. Working at a small library you get to try out every area of library work...if one task starts to feel monotonous there are plenty of other tasks to switch to and attack! I geek patrons' stories and enthusiasm for libraries.
I geek dogs ... I read all the dog-related books (except horror stories) in my library & place holds for new books along the Central Coast. I'm currently reading about shelter dogs, dog massage, Oogy, The Lost Dogs, First Lady of the Seeing Eye, and various Children's books including I Am the Dog. I fell in love with dogs and dog adoption after adopting my awesome dog Barkley who adores story time and being part of any library event.
I geek Christian fiction ... so nice to relax on a positive note. My favorite authors: Gilbert Morris, Terri Blackstock, Dee Henderson, Deeanne Gist, Janette Oke. It's exciting for me that my patrons keep asking for more Christian fiction as well!

katiegeeksstoriesoffaith&imagination
I am most passionate about faith in Christ (about knowing God and His great love for us and loving others) and in imaginative stories. I like inspirational true life stories and also imaginative stories of fiction. And I am especially passionate about how faith and imagination are related. Jesus often spoke in parables when he taught people. Stories help us understand our own lives better, and the wonders and mysteries of life. They can help us live with more faith, imagination courage, and heart. I like authors like C.S. Lewis, J.R.R Tolkien, George MacDonald, Jill Williamson, R.J. Anderson, Brandon Mull, David and Karen Mains, Cornelia Funke, Shannon Hale, Edward Eager, Donita K. Paul, Andrew Peterson, Patricia C. Wrede, J.K. Rowling, Jessica Day George, Wayne Thomas Batson, John and Stasi Eldredge and more.
With currently being unemployed especially now and also throughout my life, the library has been a huge blessing to me. I have always found it to be a treasure trove of good stories waiting to be discovered and a world of possibilities for learning about interesting topics. I am very grateful for my local library and the incredible role it has played in my life!

Libraries Evolve and Adapt
Public libraries are continuously evolving to meet the needs of patrons and stay relevant in a changing world. According to a recent article on smartplanet.com, "The recent economic slump may have savaged many public and academic library budgets, and global digitization may be changing their mission. But a new survey of 1,201 libraries across North America finds spending has leveled, demand for services is up, and many are accelerating their moves to digitized offerings."

Strong Home Prices and Libraries
Public libraries have numerous positive effects on local communities. For example, many studies suggest libraries improve local home prices.
“Historically, strong home prices have been dependent on a strong school system and the town’s infrastructure,” says Cathy Foster, a library trustee and realtor in La Grange Park, Illinois, in a recent article.
“Two major components of this infrastructure are a public library and a park (recreation) district. The more features and benefits you can add to an item, such as a house, the greater its value will be. Conversely, take away any features and you have diminished the value. This translates into lower home prices.”

tayloregeekscheerleading
I have been a cheerleader for eight years. I am currently a middle school cheerleader and I'm in 7th grade—which means I've cheered since I was five.
Cheerleading is my life. I love it, I love it, I love it! Many people believe cheerleading isn't a real sport, it's just standing on the sidelines yelling 'go team!' with the rest of the fans. They're wrong.
Cheerleading is, no matter how easy it may look, making everybody excited and pumped up whether we're winning by two or losing by 20. It's a lot more than just yelling—trust me. Some teams usually go to competitions, as well. Competition cheerleading is the hardest kind of cheerleading there is—yes, there are different types.
In competition cheerleading, the team works a whole year, at least three times a week, for two minutes and 30 seconds. During those 150 seconds, the team's job is to entertain the audience and wow the judges by tumbling (gymnastics), stunting (build-ups/pyramids), dancing, cheering and facials (smiling). That just goes to show you that cheerleading is not just a sport, but an extremely intense sport in which you require major muscular abilities. Cheerleading is more than a sport to me—its a lifestyle. A lifestyle I will never give up.

Evolution of the Word “Geek”
Geek the Library changes the word “geek” from a noun to a verb. (The term geek continues to evolve, so this wasn’t an entirely new use of the word.) Our definition is: to “geek” something is to be “passionate” about it. Interestingly, during our pilot when we tested the campaign with nearly 100 U.S. public libraries, we found pilot community residents picking up on how we used the term within the campaign and integrating it into general conversation.
The definition of individual words and phrases is constantly changing and “geek” is no exception. Read language columnist Mark Peters’ view of “geek’s” evolution over the years.

Last year, I learned how to crochet. This year, I decided to quit smoking and tackle knitting (because no mere string is going to beat me!) I joined up with a stitch group at the library—that's where I do all my best stitching anyhow, and haven't looked back. I'm smoke free (since July 4th), learned a new skill and made a great group of friends (even if they mostly are at least 20-30 years older than me.) I <3 the library!

I have always been interested in my family history but never knew where to go or how to start. The library was the perfect place for me to look up my Scottish ancestry, as well as dig into census records and obituaries from states across the country. The library helped me find my family.

I've been a paper folder since the late 1980s. I needed to create a display for the library where I worked as a clerk, so I taught myself using the book Origami by Hideaki Sakata. More than 20 years later, I'm still folding and I still work at the same library, but now I'm the manager. I recently created an origami Hogwarts Castle to celebrate the release of the new Harry Potter movie. The model is from Eric Kenneway's book Complete Origami.

Michigan Libraries Get Their Geek On
Many Michigan Public Libraries are implementing local Geek the Library campaigns. (In fact, East Lansing Public Library was the first library to sign up for the campaign after we opened the program to all U.S. public libraries!) See if your local library is involved. If not, ask them to visit get.geekthelibrary.org for more information.

The best part about getting a new book is not only getting to read it, but getting a chance to tell it. I'm a local storyteller and I'm here to say 'thank you' for the material that has led to good times reading and good times acting them out.

The best part of raising pigs? Bacon. I borrowed Storey's Guide to Raising Pigs from my local public library three years ago, and my freezers have been full of bacon, sausage, chops and hams ever since.

Crocheting is a huge creativity outlet for me and one that keeps my mind peaceful and my hands productive in my down time. The sky is the limit to what can be created, from old timey crafts to boutique garments. I just can't get enough.

The library is a place where I can explore areas of interest that I never explored before. Everything is open to the experience of knowledge, just like a beginner's mind. The library provides me with my Zen Koans, my Buddhist books and a space to quietly meditate. It provides a venue for spiritual and personal growth.

I fell in love with Bollywood movies about four years ago when I took a dance class on Bollywood style dancing. I can never get enough! In a Bollywood movie, you have adventure, romance and tragedy ... all at once. They are sometimes fun and upbeat, sometimes sad. My favorite Bollywood actor is Aamir Khan. You can catch him in Lagaan, and several other movies. Watch, enjoy, learn to dance!

I'm starting to think hipsters don't exist. I've lived in Portland and now I'm in Brooklyn, and I see them everywhere! But ask a perceived hipster if he or she is a hipster and you might get a PBR thrown in your face. Ironically, I want to be a hipster myself, but my longing to enter hipsterdom negates me from ever becoming one. Curses!

Geek the Library Gets People Talking
Since launching the Geek the Library community awareness campaign in June 2009, we’ve received a wide range of comments about the concept and our use of ‘geek’ as a verb—some positive and some negative. But whether you love it or hate it, Geek the Library gets people talking about public libraries, and that’s a positive!

kathygeeksthegreatestband
I have been a fan of the best rock-n-roll band in the world for the past 39 years. Led Zeppelin is one of the most influential rock bands in the last half-century. Jimmy Page (guitar/producer/founder), Robert Plant (vocalist/harmonica/tambourine), John Paul Jones (bass guitar; key boards and more) and John Bonham (drums/percussion) were in their own right amazing musicians, but when they came together in 1968 first as the New Yardbirds and then as Led Zeppelin, the world of music was never going to be the same.
To listen to Robert Plant’s voice on Led I and then realize he was only 19-years old it blows one’s mind, he could sing with the depth and wisdom of blues artists twice his age. Best of all, Robert is still out there recording 42-years later. Jimmy Page, to me, remains the best guitarist of all time. Jimmy was/is innovative, his producing skills amazing, and his drive for perfection uncompromising. John Paul Jones was/is the consummate professional and can nail a rhythm section to the floor, sensational. Sadly, John Bonham, the world’s greatest rock-n-roll drummer died in 1980. In his short 32 years, he changed how drummers went about the art of drumming, forever.
I have a friend of often quips, 'Wow Kathy that’s a record, it’s been 23-minutes since your arrival before you referenced LZ…' Cute, but who do my friends come too when they want a quick reference on the band? Me. Why? Because I geek Led Zeppelin.

Jim Henson has always been an inspiration to me and mostly the reason I have been fascinated by puppets. The only thing is, puppets and puppetry have been kind of downsized as kids entertainment more than an art form. Recently, I've actually been able to request some very good books on puppets and puppet building from my local library. As someone who is still a beginner at building puppets, this is a great place for resources. Not to mention that I have also found DVDs and books on the history of puppetry. I highly encourage anyone to read the history of puppets and see that it's not just kids stuff.

Bringing Communities Together
Public libraries provide diverse resources that bring the entire community together. “There is a resurgence of this desire for community, and we’re all looking for a place to come together. The library is neutral. It’s not political; it’s not religious; it’s not commercial,” noted Suzanne M. Stauffer, an assistant professor in the LSU School of Library and Information Science, in a recent BusinessReport.com article. “Everybody can come and use it; it doesn’t matter what your philosophy is. It’s a place you can go and have your educational, informational and recreational needs met.” Read the full article.

I grew up with a family of geeks. We all loved to read and being from a family with 10 kids, it was a great way to entertain so many people cheaply. I think we went to the library every Saturday and I was the one who checked out the most books, which always surprised people since I was dyslexic, but it was an obstacle I learned to overcome because books were so fascinating! I remember being stuck in the house because of nasty Minnesota winter weather and reading the encyclopedia because I ran out of things to read! My love to read stayed with me my whole life and now I am in school to become a librarian. Reading is my constant companion and will be with me always.

I've always been that person who asked the questions and wanted to try something different. I want to be that person you want with you if your plane, ship, tour bus, spacecraft, etc. crashes in unfamiliar territory. I've always worked to acquire new personal knowledge and new hands-on skills whenever I can. Doing so has brought me into a more orderly, but very active world where I am always surrounded by resources. What something can do, or what we can do with it, is much more important than what it is called.

And, O.K., I don't get to actually play them (except when the kids 'force' me to sing with them on Rock Band-- watch your eardrums!), but I do get to share in the joy, relaxation, teamwork and mega hand-eye coordination they bring to our patrons. Wow! I geek a place to tell why school libraries are so important to students—cause you and I might know when we've found good info by 'just googling' but kids do not. So they hop and bop into the school library and a really nice person helps them with their search and with finding a new book to read and with using a digital camera and with making a video clip and with the question, 'why won't my computer work' and with how to make research more effective, and...Wow! donnageekssewing&crafting&creating
I love searching for unique fabrics, interesting buttons and vintage clothing in second-hand stores. When I was a child, I would stand behind my mom's sewing machine and watch her make all of our clothing. She gave me a scrap of fabric and a piece of red yarn and taught me to sew when I was four years old. I started going to the Argentine Branch library when I was seven years old. I always loved the smell of the books, the waxed floor, and the spiral stairs leading down to the children's books that held so many wonders for me. Even now, as an adult, I still feel a sense of awe and anticipation when I walk through those doors. I enjoy browsing through the books in the arts and crafts section. I take them home like good friends and find inspiration to create something new from something old. I have three hobbies that make me feel contented, all intertwined together like all of the personalities that come and go from the library.

Libraries add value to every community. According to a recent study by the Haas Center for Business Research and Economic Development, University of West Florida, in many communities, libraries contribute to job creation, a strong economy and even wage increases. Findings reveal that for every one tax dollar received, Florida libraries provide $8.32 in value. That’s up from $6.54 in 2004. Read the complete study.

Like most librarians I have met, I have a wide range of interests, and it doesn't bother me that they don't always seem to go together. In addition to my MLIS, I have a BA in English Literature as well as classical languages. While I love the classics, I also adore science fiction and fantasy. Growing up my library had the tiniest sci fi section, and I just read it all up. I always thought: 'If I ever work in a library, they will have a much bigger and better sci fi fantasy section'—and we do. I'm into TV and movies in the same genre, and someday I will go to one of the big sci fi fantasy conventions.

Libraries Transform Lives
Libraries provide opportunities for anyone to gain knowledge—without judgment. Access to library resources and services change lives on a daily basis.
"…there are also moments when a book can save our life. I remember listening to a new author talk about what had been a very oppressive childhood that by the time she was 13 had lead to a deep sense of hopelessness till the day she found a book at her small local library. The novel had a protagonist that mirrored her experience and for the first time in her young life she realized she wasn’t alone and there were choices to be made. It changed everything and opened up her limited vision beyond the stifling neighborhood where she lived."
Don’t allow anyone to lose the opportunity to learn and explore. Keep library doors open. Talk about public library funding in your community. Your voice matters.

I have never thought I would find a job so perfectly suited for my geekness. I'm a youth services librarian in a small rural library. I get to read books to children, do fun crafts, sing songs, do silly rhymes, perform finger-plays, play with puppets, talk with kids of all ages, play video games, dress up, take the teens to lunch, watch movies, go to the swimming pool, recommend books, and just share my knowledge and gain knowledge from those around me. It's a geek-worthy job and when my Zoology knowledge comes in handy it makes me geek-happy! What more could this scientist geek turned librarian geek want?
